Joost van der Maarel (born 26 January 1962 in The Hague) is a Swedish translator and publisher with Dutch roots.

Biography

Joost van der Maarel

Van der Maarel worked as a publisher and managing director of Opulus Press in Uppsala between 1990 and 2004 and was involved in launching the academic journals Journal of Vegetation Science (1990–2004)[1], Applied Vegetation Science (1998–2004)[2] and Journal of Coastal Conservation[3] (1995–2004). Opulus Press was one of the first scientific publishers in the world to start using desktop publishing on Apple Macintosh computers, which led to much shorter production times and significantly lower costs. He has also been the editor of Folia Geobotanica[4] and Acta Phytogeographica Suecica[5], as well as a number of scientific books[6][7]

Between 2006 and 2014, van der Maarel served as a full member of the municipal council for the Moderate Party in Ludvika Municipality [8].

Joost is the son of Eddy en Marijke van der Maarel.

Awards and recognition

1978 – Dutch Junior Athletics Champion, 3000 m (Dutch Indoor Athletics Championships)

1984 – Dutch cross-country skiing champion (50 km), Isny im Allgäu, Germany.
